Noel Chanan (b.1939), director of The Artist and the Poet, studied art and photography before joining the BBC as a trainee in 1962. Constitutionally unsuited to life in a big organisation he left after four years, grateful for the best possible training in television and film making, and set up as a freelance producer, director and editor of docs, as occasion demanded. Fifty years on, still active as a film maker, he is also the author of two monographs on pioneers of photography.
Meeting Leonard Baskin in 1973, and through him, Ted Hughes, count amongst the key events of his life.
